A Better Me
I have never been a strong writer nor will I ever be the best. I always dreaded writing papers and was not very excited about any previous English class. However, English 1010 has made me a much better writer today than I was eight weeks ago.
Ever since middle school I struggled with English classes; throughout high school and previous college English courses the struggle seemed worse. Therefore, coming into English 1010 and discovering there would be seven papers due during the eight week course I was very nervous about how I would manage to complete them.
The first paper “Soundtrack to My Life” almost seemed too easy to write, I thought to myself that I would not be receiving a decent grade because I thought I wrote the paper too quickly. I proof read and proof read again then deciding it was time to send the paper to smart thinking. Upon receiving the smart thinking tutor’s response I felt more confident that I may have actually written a decent paper which almost surprised me. When it came time to turn the paper in I was almost excited to see the grade I would later obtain which was a first for me. In the past I loathed that moment knowing how much I had struggled to write a paper to hand it in and receive an average or below grade. When the time came for the paper to be returned with a final grade it was wonderful. It was one of the few and far between papers with an “A” grade and a lack of red lines throughout. I was ecstatic for what had been received and almost excited to begin the next assignment. During the duration of the course I continued to be excited about what I was writing and eager to begin the next. As each paper was handed in for final grading there was continual positive feedback and suggestions on ways to become a better writer.
From the course I also learned how to make better use of resources already available to me to help improve my writing. Resources such Microsoft word to better proofread the papers before turning them in. I also learned about smart thinking to provide another look at my papers, show me what I have done wrong, and give me suggestions on ways to better my papers. Both resources not only helped me through the class but also will continue to help me throughout my career at Cuyahoga Community College.
I am by no means a professional writer today, but I do have more confidence in my writing. Now when I begin a paper, I am no longer intimidated by whatever length it needs to be, I am sure I can meet it and not struggle doing so. I feel more prepared going into higher English courses and extending my education through my future career because of what I learned in my English 1010 class.
